The fermentation process require a very high level of cleanliness and microbial control during the process and subsequently results in a high density of fungal, yeast or bacterial biomass as well as other dissolved solids that have to be separated from the liquid phase, which typically contains the targeted compounds. As such, all raw materials of the process such a feed stock, water and air must be processed for particles and potential microbial contamination. After the fermentation process, continuous management of the microbial risk has to be managed as well as the need to have an effective method of handling high solids solutions to yield high concentration of the biomass and high recovery of the concentrated targeted molecules.
